Its largest urban areas include Houston and Pasadena. Other large urban areas such as Baytown, League City and Missouri City share their populations with Harris County, Texas as well as other surrounding counties.

Houston serves as the center of commerce, culture, economy and education for the region and is the seat of Harris County. As a significant port and financial center for oil and other petrochemicals, Houston’s energy sector dominates the flourishing economy. Aeronautics, biomedical research and the Port of Houston also play a major role in the region’s financial and industrial base.

Houston, TX is also home to several outstanding facilities for higher education, which include Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and a number of campuses associated with the University of Houston. Houston is home to nearly two million residents.

Often referred to as “Space City”, Houston plays host to NASA’s renowned Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. Home of Mission Control, the space center is also the site of the largest IMAX Theater in Texas. Additional sites of interest in Houston include the cosmopolitan Theater District, which claims 17 blocks in the heart of downtown Houston, the Galleria, Galveston Island, Hermann Park, the Reliant Center and Sam Houston Historical Park. Houston also hosts several college level sporting events and such professional sports teams as the Astros and Texans.

Pasadena, TX, population 141,674, is the largest suburb of the Houston metro area. Pasadena’s base of employment, linked closely with the deepwater port in Houston and the affiliated industrial sectors, remains prosperous. This historic city is home to numerous museums such as the Armand Bayou Nature Center, the Bay Area Museum and the Pasadena Historical Museum. Pasadena also offers a quaint community theater venue, the Pasadena Philharmonic Orchestra and a rodeo. Facilities for higher learning in Pasadena include the San Jacinto College System, Texas Chiropractic College and a portion of the University of Houston Clear Lake. Pasadena was also the site of the 1980 movie Urban Cowboy, which starred John Travolta and Debra Winger.

Harris County, Texas, the largest TX County east of the Nueces River, covers nearly 1,800 square miles of land.
