Leon County, TX spreads throughout 1,080 square miles and is home to the cities of Buffalo, Centerville, Hilltop Lakes, Jewett, Leona, Marquez, Normangee, and Oakwood. Leon County has a population of 15,335 (Census 2000), while Centerville, the county seat, holds a population of 903. The citizens of Leon County, TX have access to five independent school districts and several institutions for higher learning within an hour's drive. These facilities include Baylor University, Stephen F. Austin University, Texas A&M University and Sam Houston State University.
Leon County, Texas is close to Fort Boggy State Park and Lake Limestone, while sites such as the stately old Leon County Courthouse and Jewett Flea Market attract visitors from near and far. The renowned “Old San Antonio Road”, also called “El Camino Real”, forms Leon County’s southern border. Eventually incorporated as Highway 21, this prominent route once led the way for such famous Texans as Davy Crockett and Sam Houston.
